Üveys Duru: Solingen, Kamperstraße 46 We booked Apartment 4 through booking.com months ahead, and the booking was confirmed. When we arrived, the landlord said the previous tenant had extended his stay and Apartment 4 wasn't available. He had accepted that extension even though we had a binding contract. It felt like attempted fraud. We insisted that the contract be honored, and after spending one night in Apartment 3, we were able to move into Apartment 4. The building is very old, with no thermal insulation. The rooms have high ceilings and are difficult to heat. Apartments 3 and 4 on the second floor are in very poor condition. We haven't seen Apartments 1 and 2, but expect they're worse. Many things are neglected, dirty, or don't work. It felt like they wanted to make money while offering very little. Parking is limited to a few public spaces. In Apartment 4, the kitchen sink has only cold water, which makes washing dishes inconvenient. There were dirty dishes in the dishwasher. The kitchen had just one teaspoon, one pan, one dirty pot of about 5 liters, three Coke glasses, and five coffee cups. Bring your own dishes and cutlery. It's hard to understand why there's no full cutlery set when a cheap 24-piece set costs less than €10. Most of the blinds were broken, couldn't be operated, and were so dusty you could write on them. The hallway lamp takes four bulbs, but three had been unscrewed. Putting two back made it acceptably bright. This doesn't seem like energy saving, since the low-watt bulbs are only used for a few minutes a day. The bathroom has a toilet, and the walls above the tiles, which were originally white, are extremely dirty. The toilet seat doesn't fit the bowl and is much too small, so using it is uncomfortable. There is an anal shower, which may be a plus for people who don't use toilet paper. No towels were provided, and the light in the mirror cabinet above the basin didn't work. Hot water comes from a 21 kW electric instantaneous heater, which is a very inefficient way to heat water. The preset temperature was too low, but could easily be turned up. When it was about 12°C outside, the apartment was only around 16°C in the evening. The heating was scheduled for about two hours a night, with a flow temperature of around 35°C. The landlord confirmed he was deliberately saving money. It was far too cold to shower or bathe comfortably. Bringing one fan heater, or preferably two, would be a good idea. The three 16A circuits should handle two 2kW fan heaters. The kitchen trash wasn't emptied once during the week. I tightened the screws on the kitchen chairs so they were safe to use. Those are the facts.

The owner was incredibly rude, and we definitely won't stay in this dump again. The place was filthy: the trash hadn't been emptied, and the dishwasher was full of dishes from previous guests. The couch had burn holes, while the bed and bedding looked like they'd been rescued from the trash. There were no shutters, only old, broken, very dusty blinds. At the dining table there were no chairs, just basic creaky benches. The bathroom was dilapidated and dirty throughout. There was no shower stall, and the curtain was too short, so flooding was bound to happen. There wasn't even a cloth to mop up, or coffee spoons and kitchen towels.

The apartment felt neglected and wasn't clean. There was no reading light beside the bed, and everything in the bathroom wobbled. The ventilation system whistled. I wouldn't recommend it.

It's dated and pretty basic, but it was clean. The train station and old town are only five minutes away. If you're practical, it's a good fit and very good value for money.
