Spitzhaus Wolf

Only the people at the service center were very friendly. Our apartment was cancelled because the heater was broken, even though we'd already paid in full. After a very long back and forth, we finally got our money back today, at least. I've never written a negative review before, but I can't give this place even one star. Stay away.

We spent almost three weeks here and unfortunately slept badly for most of the stay. The double bed had unsuitable sheets that felt uncomfortable and made us sweaty in the hot weather, leaving wet patches. We washed the bedding several times. The mattress was very springy, so my partner woke when I turned over, and the bed sloped, probably because of the floor, so we kept rolling to one side. The top floor also got very hot during summer temperatures often above 30°C, though the garden was a lovely place to relax when it wasn't too warm. The house itself is an unusual old building in the middle of a small village, with a lot of history, peaceful surroundings, and a good renovation and furnishings inside. Cleaning could be much better: we cleaned it ourselves and left it cleaner than we found it. There were lots of cobwebs, dirty floors, a wine glass left broken by previous guests, and even the toilet brush needed replacing. Several areas need maintenance, and the microwave kept blowing the fuses when switched on. We also had to ask locals about waste collection day, since the instructions only made clear that rubbish should be sorted and bins were in the basement. We had to put the container outside, which brought us into direct contact with villagers. A roll of yellow bags for plastic waste was provided, but there were none in the house. The fireplace and sauna shown in some photos are no longer available because of local regulations.

The house is in a beautiful location, but it deserves far better care. We couldn't enjoy the advertised cozy TV evening in the living room because the television hadn't been programmed. The windows were filthy, water was leaking in several places, and the house was freezing, so we had to use a space heater. It feels as though money is being taken out without effort to make the place comfortable. Other guests have apparently raised the same complaints, yet nothing seems to change. We can't recommend it and can only warn others.

Spitzhaus Wolf is in the charming Mosel village of Wolf, in a well-known wine region, and there are lovely walking routes and mountain-bike trails nearby. Traben-Trarbach, Bernkastel-Kues, and Trier are also within easy reach. The old house dates to 1618 and has plenty of charm; it's frequently photographed and reasonably well equipped. The main bedroom window could use a new roller blind. For wine, Rivaner Feinherb Trocken from Weingut Günter Comes is highly recommended.
