This hostel is located a beautiful Baroque building in the historical heart of Trier, a 10-minute walk from the River Moselle. The bright rooms at the Kolpinghaus Trier are furnished with a wardrobe, table and armchair. There is a wash basin in the room as well as shared showers and toilets in the hallway. Guests are welcome to relax on the terrace or with a game of billards and table tennis. The hostel is an 8-minute walk from the Porta Nigra (Roman gate) and the Karl Marx House. The famous Römerbrücke (Roman bridge) and Trier Main Station are a 15-minute walk from the Warsberger Hof.

The shower setup may be a problem if you're very overweight, and light sleepers should think carefully before booking. I didn't have a pleasant experience. This is a youth hostel with a 1960s feel: the rooms are neat, but it brought back the kind of high school trips I hated. Function comes first throughout, including the look of things, and soundproofing seems not to have been considered. There is supposed to be quiet from 10pm to 7am, but the teenagers don't always care about that rule. There isn't a lift. Upstairs, one bathroom with two shower stations serves 14 rooms. On the other floors, shower privacy is even more limited because you can't lock out people who might walk in. I was lucky enough to find a time when nobody came in. You can get laundry done in the basement, which had WW2 bunker vibes, and ask to store luggage if you're nice. Service also tends to put function ahead of politeness. During most of my stay, reception was unstaffed.

The owners were kind and helpful, even letting me change my stay after a train mishap. My single room was small but clean and cozy, and the bathrooms were clean too. The location is fantastic, and the hostel seemed really well run.

Right behind the main square, the location is great, and it felt safe and quiet. I slept very well. For me, everything was just right: clean shared bathroom and shower, and a clean room. It was probably the cheapest single room in town. The staff were friendly, booking was simple, and it feels like they run the place with heart. I appreciated the booklet for guests with the hostel's history and Trier travel information. Dankeschön! I'd definitely stay again when I visit Trier. Just keep in mind there's no lift. With big or heavy luggage, all those stairs would be difficult.

My single room cost €45 without breakfast and was very comfortable, great value. It was cool on the third floor, with a window facing the park. You can hire a fan in summer, too. The bathrooms and washbasins in the room were spotless. The staff were very kind, and the place is quiet while still close to the centre, only a 15min walk from the main train station.

The location is excellent, but the room was extremely bare, and the groups of young people running between rooms made the place feel like a prison cell. What stuck with me most, though, was the lack of hospitality. I had an appointment and was running late for checkout, so I politely asked for an extra 30 minutes. I would've been fine with a no. Instead, the receptionist said, “I’ll give you 20 minutes, and not a second more.” When she saw my shocked expression, she raised a finger and repeated, “Not a second later.” I still smile at how over the top that moment was. If you work with people, showing them a bit of respect shouldn't be too much to ask.
