Gasthof Hinterwirt

The braised ox cheek was incredible, and this was one of my favorite meals in Bavaria. We had a great time sitting outside in the beautiful weather. If you’re nearby, make sure to stop in!

We arrived with my family a little after 8 pm. The place looked nice and had good reviews, and although it was fairly busy, most people had food in front of them and the atmosphere seemed lively. We were seated, then a few minutes later the waiter told us the kitchen was closed. He chuckled with people at nearby tables, with “American” mixed into the conversation. It felt really uncomfortable and downright rude. It was especially shocking given that the place is connected to a hotel. Luckily, Taverne Lindos was around the corner. They were incredibly friendly and the food was fabulous. I highly recommend Taverne Lindos. I’ll be leaving them a five-star review too.

The service is just as good as the food, and the prices are reasonable for the value. Gasthof Hinterwirt is one of those rare places in Germany that never disappoints. Their Bavarian specialties are consistently sensational and homemade. The Schweinshax'n is outstanding, tender enough to fall off the bone with a wonderfully crunchy crust. The sauces have that lovely sweet and savory Bavarian balance, without becoming cloying or overpowering.

The omelette was awesome, and it’s a great place for brunch. The person who charged me, maybe the owner, didn’t understand much English, but we managed with common sense and a little knowledge of German numbers.
