The weather was the drawback. It’s probably always cold there. Swimming in the nearby North Sea seems unlikely, though you can sunbathe if you find shelter from the wind. Still, it’s a short drive to Oldenburg, Bremen and Hamburg, and Varel and Obenströhe are small, quiet towns with decent grocery stores. The house is large and beautiful, with a nice garden, indoor pool and convenient location, and the hosts were responsive. We visited in August 2013. The well-kept buildings and landscape gave the area a calm, comfortable feel.
