An absolute hole. The sheets were stained and the mattress sagged. The showerhead was yellow with limescale, there was mildew in the shower stall, and the mosaic shower floor had loose tiles. Paint was peeling, and there were brown stains on the bathroom door and walls. Breakfast felt like the cheapest discount-store spread: two kinds of sausage, one kind of cheese, and whole egg from a carton for the “scrambled eggs.” There were no smoke detectors, and there was no room light near the hallway switch. Incredible that this place is still open.

I’m comparing it with hotels in the same category, and that’s why I gave it four stars. The old-fashioned look costs it a star; it could use a bit of renovation.

Etzenrot is about 5 minutes by car from Waldbronn, 10 from Ettlingen, and 25 from Karlsruhe. The hotel is comfortable, the manager really kind, and it’s right beside a large park.

Mr. Abraham deserves a special mention for being so welcoming. The hotel is in the process of being upgraded.

A cosy room and a good breakfast. I’d stay here again.
