Hotel Alte Brennerei

The breakfast buffet had a lot to choose from, and our room, though on the small side, was comfortable, modern, and very well soundproofed. There was a safe, but I couldn’t see any air conditioning. The hotel and restaurant are in renovated buildings near the edge of the Altstadt, handy for both the railway station and castle. The reception isn’t staffed around the clock, so checking in before 15.00 hrs can be tricky. It also took us a while to understand how the hotel and restaurant operate separately. At breakfast, the restaurant staff treated us normally, though they were very anxious, even bossy, about where we sat. The rest of the day, they acted as if they’d never seen us and insisted rather strongly that we book ahead.

Breakfast was a highlight for me, with several hot and cold options, and the Wi-Fi worked well. The room was comfortable, though its window looked onto the hotel courtyard, which doubles as the restaurant’s outdoor dining area. That meant some noise in the early evening, but it was quiet at night. The hotel is at the northeast end of Breite Straße, Wernigerode’s main street, not far from the main train station. Reception is accessed from Grüne Straße, a side street off Breite Straße, though it can be hard to find a staff member there in the morning.

The food was good, and the rooms were great, though the beds weren’t. A friendly guest house right in the town center, with traditional dining.

The rooms are very small and there’s a steep staircase, with parking 200m away. Staff were flexible, and the breakfast buffet was great.
