After 3.5 hours of hiking, we finally reached Kahler Asten on Sunday January 04, 2026. The place is called „Restaurant and Hotel“, but there was nothing to eat, not even a cookie. On a Sunday! The most we could get was a hot chocolate that was only mid-quality. A BIG SHAME. Stay away, you'll definitely be shocked.

I came to see the view from the observation tower, but ended up enjoying the view of the goats too! 🐐 The nature center/mini museum was nice, with displays of native animals, birds, and nature. I also liked the explanation and information about the destructive beetle that's damaging the trees.

There was barely any food for sale, and it was expensive.

We tried one of their ice creams outside in the sun, even though it was 2 degrees out! It's a very small cafe for a place that will probably get popular in warmer weather or when there's snow, but you should try their ice cream.

Kahler asten and astenturm hotel are two names for one hotel, but nowhere is the name Astenturm hotel mentioned. Following Google Maps directions, it was impossible to drive there.
