Haus Bergfrieden

The room wasn’t very clean, and the staff were extremely unfriendly. The walls were so thin I could hear the neighbors eating, with their utensils clicking, then fighting, making up, watching TV, and going back for seconds at making up. Wi-Fi didn’t work, and there’s no mobile internet in this valley. If you want to get to Winterberg, you’re stuck with the last bus at 7 pm.

The promised parking spot wasn’t available when we arrived, and the owner was very unfriendly. Inside the apartment, we had to search for sheets and found some that stank. The room didn’t match the photos, it was much smaller, and the extra mattress under the one-person bed didn’t make it a double bed. Months later, the owner offered a night as compensation, and we accepted. That stay was even worse. She sent five texts saying we had entered with an old code, but we’d been given a code that worked for only one room, the one meant for us. The supposed free night was one we had to pay for, and we’re still waiting for a refund for that second night. Terrible and dishonest!

The bed was clean and comfortable, and the main real advantage is how close the slopes are, about 50 meters on foot. The apartment itself was a letdown. There was a terrible smell, especially in the bathroom and the little kitchen tucked into the hallway. It was so cramped and unpleasant that we didn't cook at all, even though cooking for ourselves was why we chose an apartment. We ate out instead. The toaster was dirty from whoever stayed before us, and the oven was dirty too. The furniture doesn't go together, one massage chair is crooked, and the other isn't plugged in. There's even a hole in the apartment door. We didn't feel at ease and were glad we only booked two nights. At €250, it felt too expensive for that short stay. For a proper vacation we'd have been really annoyed, and looking back, a hotel with breakfast would've been a better use of the money.

The nearest restaurant is around 5 km away and the shop about 10 km away. Inside, the room has a sour smell, and the Wi-Fi doesn't work.
