Aal Kate

The food was just okay. We ordered a platter for six, and it still wasn't enough for four of us, so we were hungry and had something else at home. The price really didn't make sense. For €130, I'd go to a sushi all-you-can-eat place and definitely leave full.

Hotel Aal-Kate in Wuppertal is tucked away, and the hotel itself is in the back building. Up front there are two restaurants and a smokehouse, which basically work as one big restaurant with three menus. It looked like the kind of place I'd often find through ViaMichelin, affordable and a little quirky, a bit off the beaten path, with an exterior that doesn't look like much. But the food was honest and really good. I had plancha-grilled halibut with fried potatoes, followed by coconut mousse with strawberries. The waiter recommended an Italian wine, a lovely Lugana. It was simple and truly delicious, and incredibly cheap for a Dane!

The sushi at Sakura Sushi bar inside the Aal-kate is really delicious and not too expensive. From what I can tell, the quality stays more or less consistent. Takeaway is just as good as eating there, though I'd choose the restaurant if I wanted to sit down. On holidays they get a little busy, so call or reserve before coming, or you may have to wait a long time.

I've had sushi there as usual, and this was among the best I've eaten in Germany. I'd have given it 4.5 stars if that were an option, since the service wasn't very friendly.
