Hotel Arcade

The manager woke me at 06:30 am because they chose that time to fix the door lock. The lock hadn’t worked properly when I arrived a bit after midnight for a work trip, and I could only get into my room after calling staff. The next morning, the manager complained that I hadn’t followed a complicated process for returning an emergency key card. It had been explained over the phone to a very tired guest, after midnight, in poor English. Following the process would also have meant leaving very expensive work equipment unattended in the room late at night, while I couldn’t leave until staff came back. That was rude and thoughtless, especially toward someone exhausted from work travel. Basic things didn’t work, and I can’t recommend the experience.

They upgraded us to a family suite, which was really Kool, and the staff were friendly and spoke very good English. The hotel is in the city center, with very clean rooms. Breakfast had lots of variety and ran from 7 in the morning until 11am on weekends, longer than usual. Just note that water bottles cost 2 euro each, and the notice is easy to miss. I’d recommend it for a night or two if you want easy access to everything.

Breakfast was the highlight, especially since it was included in the quite reasonable price. The staff were attentive, and it was my first time seeing real honeycomb offered at breakfast. We picked the hotel for its closeness to the Schwebebahn for a theatre visit in Wuppertal, and the receptionist was very helpful and friendly. We stayed one night at the end of January. Our fourth-floor room near the loft was clean and warm, but quite small, with no bath or kettle, both of which we usually hope for. We drove, but couldn’t park beside the hotel, and roadworks made our chosen car park impossible to find, though that wasn’t the hotel’s fault. Since it was a Sunday night, the center was quiet and everything seemed closed, so a bar at the hotel would have been nice. We’d stay again with better planning in advance.

The main station and city center are both an easy walk away. Our room was clean and spacious, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was plentiful and nicely set out, with coffee to go, decaffeinated drinks, and gluten-free bread available on request.
