Usedom Palace

Dinner at Schwabe's Restaurant was a highlight of our stay at Usedom Palace Hotel Zinnowitz. The tables were nicely set, and once we sat down we forgot about the heavy rain outside. The food was carefully prepared with notably fresh, high-quality ingredients, from the Parma ham in the kitchen's greeting to the gratinated goat cheese, aromatic cherry tomatoes, and excellent balsamic. The Wiener Schnitzel was properly fried in clarified butter, with capers that actually tasted like capers. We had a 2016 Argentinean ALAMOS Malbec and a 2014 Montepulciano from LARINUM, both tasty with the starter and main. Crème brûlée and pistachio ice cream finished things off nicely, and at a reasonable price. We chose Zinnowitz for an overnight stay, and it got quieter as we travelled there. On arrival, the place felt peaceful. We'd called the Palace Hotel ahead, and hotel director Annett Jahnke was waiting by the hotel's own parking lot to greet us warmly. We could pick between two rooms and chose the sea-view room right above the restaurant. The building seemed to have been renovated recently, with fresh, bright colors throughout. It felt well cared for and clean, as did our room, decorated in pale blue from the walls and ceiling to the furnishings. The patterns and decor gave it a pleasant step-back-in-time feel. We slept very well on the good mattress and quality bedding. The spacious balcony looked directly out to the Baltic Sea, though rain that evening and the next morning kept us from spending longer there. There was a safe, but it was too small for a notebook, and a minibar we didn't use. The bathroom was roomy, white marble, and comfortable for two. We didn't make much use of the hotel's wellness facilities, partly because the restaurant appealed more and partly because we wanted some time to ourselves. Breakfast was remarkably good, with a relaxed atmosphere and lots of things that weren't supermarket products. The honey, jams, and juices came from regional small family businesses and were handmade. The pear jam tasted so much like pears that it brought back childhood memories. If you have time, a weekend or longer in Zinnowitz is worth it. The restaurant was excellent, and the bar was lovely. The staff were attentive and friendly while still being discreet. It was 100% perfect.
