The owner avoided signing an employment contract, and I was paid 300 DKK in cash for three hours, even though we had agreed on 140 DKK an hour plus extra for Sunday work. I have text messages about the agreed rate. When I called to question the amount, she asked, “WHAT DO YOU WANT?” and said it was right because she had to pay taxes, which she said were 40%. There was no signed contract, so no taxes would be paid, and 40% taxes is a lie. The Job center in Aabenraa also confirmed that 40% taxes is a lie. She cheated me out of a miserable amount, less than 20 euros! This started after I finished cleaning on Sunday, July 6th, 2025. I was told to come back the following Saturday, although at my interview two days earlier I’d been told there would also be work during the coming week, even if the restaurant was closed and there might be fewer customers. My time was wasted, and I was lied to about the hours, but that was only the start. When I contacted the owner about pay for those three hours and said I didn’t want this kind of job and just wanted to be paid and move on, she replied that they were on holiday and I could meet her in 10 days. We’d just had an interview two days before, and no one had mentioned a holiday. Why hire a worker if you’re going away? I said I might not still be in Aabenraa then, and suddenly she offered to meet the next day, Monday July 7th. We agreed on 11am. I arrived two minutes late, and she paid me through the car window because they were leaving and couldn’t wait. If you stay here, you’re very likely supporting the exploitation of foreign workers, many of whom don’t speak English, let alone Danish, and may not know their rights. If you still choose to stay, enjoy your room. It was very likely cleaned and the bed made by an exploited worker.
