Danhostel Aarhus City

The rooms were both very cold, even with the heating turned all the way up. After the first night, we got our money back for it and were moved to the right room for the second night, at least. The automatic system gave us keys to the wrong room, different from the one we'd booked through booking. It had two extra bunk beds alongside the double bed, and someone else's belongings were there. It turned out to be double booked: four gentlemen arrived, first at 2 am and then again after 4 am. With self check-in and no one to contact in an emergency, there was no way to sort it out. Then the fire alarm went off at 2:30 am. Not a great night. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

The location is unbeatable, the staff are friendly, and parking was available for an extra fee. Free WiFi was another plus. We're a family of four and booked a family room with a private bathroom. My sister, traveling alone with one child, was given a family room twice the size of ours. I don't understand how they assign rooms, but that felt like a big customer service miss. Ours was tiny, hot, and had just one window that opened. The old mattresses had no comfort left. I can see why the hostel has so many bad reviews.

It's very central, but that's the only good thing I can say. I've never seen hostel bathrooms this dirty. Seriously, management should be embarrassed. It looks like the sanitary units are hardly ever deep cleaned, and only the surfaces get wiped every other day, which isn't enough. These were different bathrooms, and every one I saw was in this condition or worse.

For the price, the room and service are reasonable, and the facilities are generally good value. But some simple issues still spoil the stay. The curtains don't close all the way, and the supposed double bed is two singles that slide apart during the night. The kitchen had only two cooking knives and very small pots for the stove. The showers on the 4th and 5th floors differ a lot, but neither lets you adjust the temperature, and sometimes the water is burning hot.
