Nordlandet

The taxi never arrived on a packed Friday in Bornholm, but Alex and the team made sure we were comfortable while we waited. In the end, one of them even drove us back to our hotel. That kindness capped off a really special evening. We’d come for dinner after our wedding, and the restaurant looked gorgeous, with a beautiful sunset view. Alex, the restaurant manager, took care of everything, and both the food and service were wonderful.

The food was delicious and the views were unique, but the service made the evening miserable. We waited until we’d asked for water four times, and the bill included items that hadn’t been ordered. One diner in our group understood Danish and heard the waitresses make racist comments about us because we’re from America. The staff seemed stressed and disorganized, and prices were above what other luxury hotels in the area charge. We arrived with high expectations because of the location and reviews, but Nordlandet should address its staff’s lack of professionalism and attention to detail. We’ll never return. It was a disastrous, expensive evening.

The view was lovely, and so was the food, but that only earned this stay two stars from me. I stayed at Nordlandet in June and left disappointed, especially considering the 3500kr per night price. The staff were basic and impersonal throughout. Breakfast was high quality, though choices were limited and there was only drip coffee, no espresso or cappuccino. There was no room service either, so we skipped breakfast on the second day and found alternatives. Our room had a semi-private balcony, but otherwise felt much like other newer Scandinavian hotels. The fireplace didn’t work, which would have been welcome during the heavy rain. There was no iron, just a steamer available on request, and no full-length mirror. Slippers cost extra despite the seaside setting. Maybe that fits the hotel’s ambitions and standards, but I expected exceptional service and quality for the price. One star for the food, one for the view.

We had such a good time. The room and view were beautiful, the sauna was great, and breakfast was delicious. Service was excellent. Truly recommend it!
