The Lodge Billund

I visited in winter for reasons unrelated to Legoland or Lalandia, but it was useful that everything was within walking distance. My room was spacious and had all I needed. The one drawback was that there wasn't a restaurant for a proper dinner, though that may have been because of the winter season.

The reception staff were five-star, but after 10 days at The Lodge, I came away with a very mixed impression. The room was spacious and had a great laptop workspace. One reception team member was a real "superhero", giving me restaurant tips and regularly checking in on how my stay was going. There are supposedly "4 Restaurants", but they're external partners, not hotel restaurants. One said it only took cash for delivery. I only learned after asking reception five days later that cards were accepted through the hotel partnership, which should have been made clear. Billund Pizza & Steakhouse nearby was fantastic. The on-site deli felt overpriced, for example 20 DKK for a Snickers, especially with few shops nearby. The comfort details were disappointing for a long stay. Despite the double bed, I got only one small duvet. A bathrobe cost 75 DKK, slippers weren't included, and I had to go to reception mid-shower to ask for conditioner to be refilled. Cleaning, fresh towels, and toilet paper all had to be requested at reception. Privacy in the women's sauna was a serious problem: on three different occasions, men opened the door while guests were expected to be undressed. I also saw several silverfish crawling on my room carpet, so I'd advise guests not to leave suitcases open on the floor. The gym is really only for maintenance, with no barbells, just assorted dumbbells and a few kettlebells up to 28kg. The sparkling water tap was out of CO2 for all 10 days, and both electric scooters in the lobby were broken for my entire stay. Breakfast tasted good, especially the chia pudding, but items stopped being replenished an hour before closing, possibly earlier. On Saturday they didn't brew more coffee when it ran out. As someone who doesn't eat pork, I also found the options very limited, just turkey or herring. The hospitality was excellent, but the facilities, cleanliness, and guest privacy need serious improvement.

I booked a room three months ahead for a one-night stay, but payment wasn't taken at the time. I emailed The Lodge to check, and they assured me the booking was confirmed and that I'd pay on arrival, so there was nothing to worry about. Then, two days before our flight, they emailed to say the booking had been cancelled, with no explanation. When I wrote back right away, they blamed a “Card error” and said they were suddenly fully booked for the night we needed. The service and behavior were absolutely disgusting. Fortunately, Legoland still had rooms available at such short notice.

Clean and comfy, with no fuss or frills. Much like plenty of other northern European hotels I've stayed in over the past decade or so. The restaurant isn't open for dinner, so if you're hungry after a day at Legoland, you'll need to get an Uber to the town centre.
