Hotel Phønix Brønderslev

The dinner was the real disappointment. My wiener schnitzel tasted bad, with lukewarm frozen peas, potatoes, and burnt butter sauce. At 200 DKK it was overpriced, and I couldn’t finish it. I was also unhappy to learn there’s no dedicated chef and the receptionist heats the food. That doesn’t feel acceptable for a dinner at this price. I hope they improve the food and consider hiring a chef. The rooms were older, but fine and met my needs.

The waffles at breakfast were good, and the place was clean. That’s about all the positives I can think of. The restaurant was closed even though the website said it would be open, and there was a terrible smell. The rest of breakfast wasn’t good. It’s okay for a night while connecting to the ferry.

We were in the newer part, where the floors were extremely noisy. The cleaners woke us at 7 am. The rooms felt dated, especially the bathroom, which could use an upgrade. It was convenient being right in the town centre, and breakfast had a nice bar, with a decent price by Danish standards. Check-in was listed as 3 pm to 6 pm, but when we arrived at 5.45 pm on Sunday, reception and the restaurant were closed. Other guests eventually told us our key was in an envelope with our name on it, on a small table in the hallway. It would have been nice to know that beforehand.

The restaurant had a calm, fresh atmosphere, with no music or other extra distractions, and the classic feel suited it well. After 5pm they serve the meal of the day. I’m not sure how to spell what we got, and my partner thought it should be a type of kotelett for a Friday evening, but it tasted good. I liked how it was served, too. I’d recommend the place if you’re after a good meal in a relaxing setting.
