The open sandwich I ordered, with breaded chicken, shrimp, sauce and a generous garnish, was enormous. Two people could easily share it, and the little side salad came with a really tasty dressing. The bistro is inside the historic Fredensborg Store Kro near Frederiksborg Castle. The dining room is in a modern renovated extension, with a bright veranda, elegant decor and large fashion-inspired posters. The older hotel and reception have plenty of charm too. Staff were friendly and efficient, and one server was so popular at our table that someone asked to take a photo with him. After more than 40 years of travelling and eating everywhere from family-run places to three-star Michelin restaurants, I can say this was a memorable stop, with quality food and generous portions.

The staff were nice and it’s a nice place, but I wouldn’t pick it for a romantic getaway. The double bed was just two beds pushed together. You know what I mean...

The location has a lot of charm, and the staff were very nice. There are comfortable sofas in the main area, but the hotel has quite a few frustrations. Some rooms are nice, while others smell stale and feel stuffy. The old doors and floors can make it noisy, and the lift was extremely slow. Housekeeping often arrived too early and made the bed even with the do not disturb sign up. I’m also not sure when the vacuum cleaner last saw use. Breakfast was sometimes okay, but no more than that, and the shower curtains were awful, making it very easy to flood the bathroom. Not having kettles in the rooms feels like a basic human rights violation. The bar closed early, and the fairly high price definitely didn’t feel justified.

It’s only a few minutes on foot to downtown and the castle, and there’s parking in front, with plenty of room on the street too. The room was comfortable, the shower was good, and the decor was well done. Breakfast was very good as well. A very good hotel, recommended!
