Fredensborghusene Guesthouse

The Fredensborg Houses (Danish: Fredensborghusene) sit in natural surroundings on the edge of Fredensborg in northern Zealand, Denmark. Jørn Utzon designed them for Danes returning after long periods working abroad, at the invitation of Dansk Samvirke, an organization supporting those citizens. Utzon helped choose the site and planned the homes so each could look over a green slope. The project came after his Kingo Houses in nearby Helsingør and grew from a 1953 competition design for southern Sweden. That design drew on Danish farmhouses arranged around courtyards and Chinese architecture, including the Forbidden City in Beijing. Utzon described the homes as “flowers on the branch of a cherry tree, each turning towards the sun.” The development uses Utzon’s additive approach, beginning with one unit and responding to the land and surroundings. Each L-shaped home has a living room and study in one part, with a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom in the other. The complex is described as having 47 courtyard homes, 30 terraced houses, and a central building with a restaurant, meeting rooms and nine guest rooms. The homes are grouped in threes around a square, each entered from it. Set on a slope and facing southeast or southwest, they get plenty of light. Their large courtyard gardens add to the open feeling, while the outer walls shield the houses from curious outsiders. The result feels secure and peaceful. A lovely destination for weddings, parties, birthdays or a honeymoon, with villas featuring high-tech facilities surrounded by green trees and nature.
