Danhostel Helsingør Vandrerhjem

I felt more like a prisoner than a tourist here. The room had eight beds crammed into a small space, with prison-like bunk beds and just one power outlet for everyone. They also wanted another 10 euros for a bedspread, which is crazy. The shower ran for only a minute before you had to press the button again. I’d give it zero stars if I could. Avoid this place.

The view straight out to Øresund was lovely, and breakfast was really good. I can see why they won the award for Denmark’s best hostel. The quality impressed me!

The kitchen was a big help in Denmark, where eating out can get expensive, since we could cook and only go out now and then. Breakfast was filling, and the coffee kept coming, which was a lifesaver. We visited in January, and the room felt warm and inviting despite the cold and dark outside. It’s a fairly basic hostel, but the down duvets and pillows felt luxurious, and the warm wood and fresh paint gave it a Nordic feel. The Italian restaurant a block away was a surprisingly great find. It is a bit of a walk, which was tough in January rain, though I imagine it’s lovely in spring or summer. Hostels really are unsung heroes of European travel. We’d absolutely recommend it.

The breakfast window had a fantastic view, and the kids had fun with the games, slack line and stilts outside. We got a warm, friendly welcome. Our room was simple, very clean, and well looked after. The foodhall came highly recommended, and it was just a 20-minute walk, even with a detour to a little playground on the way.
