Hotel HøjbySø

There were plenty of signs, so the hotel was easy to find. I was there for an anniversary party and had a generally nice time. The staff were friendly and efficient, though they served things so quickly that food sometimes got spilled. The menu was typical for this sort of event and pretty good. All in all, a very pleasant visit.

I didn't end up staying at Hotel Højbysø, and this is why. A family member's health suddenly got worse, so I had to cancel my one-night booking. I knew it was too late to get a refund, but I called to explain that I wouldn't be coming. The response was, “You are talking to a hotel which has had no income for two years, there is nothing we can do.” It felt cold, but I understood that times had been hard. Still, they sent an invoice for the full amount, including breakfast they didn't have to prepare. That struck me as greedy and completely lacking in hospitality. I'll book somewhere else in future.

The listing said pets were welcome for a fee. I called and clearly told them I was travelling with a dog, and they said a late check-in was fine. The next morning, after I'd paid, they told me pets weren't allowed anywhere in the hotel and hurried me out without breakfast.

The hotel is in a nice location and has good facilities and breakfast. But the management's treatment of us was heartless and cruel. I was travelling with my 91-year-old aunt, who has several physical disabilities. As we were preparing to check out, she developed severe, painful stomach distress and spent a long time in the bathroom before washing up and changing. Check-out was at 10:30 AM. At 10:45, while she was still in there, staff kept knocking, saying they had to clean the room. I explained what was happening and that we'd leave as soon as she could, but they snapped at me, asking how long we needed and telling us we were late. Five minutes later, the manager came back and demanded that we get out so they could clean. Four staff members and the manager waited outside, glaring, knocking, and insisting. I explained again that this was unexpected and asked them to be patient. They refused. A young man and woman came into the room and started stripping the beds while my aunt was still naked in the bathroom. She is partially deaf, has low vision, and is lame on her left side. When she came out asking what was happening, I brought her clean clothes and suggested she dress in the bathroom because the cleaning staff were in the room. We finally got out of that shockingly abusive hotel around 11:30 AM. Yes, we were late, but sometimes circumstances are out of your control. People in hospitality should understand that and show some consideration, especially for elderly people and those with disabilities. The staff, under a cold and cruel manager, showed complete disrespect for people with differences. We've never been so humiliated at a hotel. I regret that we tried so hard to accommodate their urgent need to clean the room, because it cost my beloved aunt so much emotional and physical suffering. I will never understand or forgive the brutal treatment we experienced at Hotel Hojbyso. Clearly, they're in the wrong business.
