What bothered me most was how my effort to clean up the area was met with hostility. I live rurally and often pick up litter on walks, from bits of plastic to even a meter-long pipe. Recently I took what I’d collected to the nearest available dumpster, at a local campsite. I know the bin is on private property, but it felt like a missed chance to cooperate. A lot of the area’s rubbish is left by visitors, not by people trying to clear it up. The campsite’s steward reacted in a way I found unexpectedly hostile. I was a young adult using a resource that was there, trying to help, and it’s disheartening to be met with negativity instead of compassion or flexibility. Maybe we should focus on the people creating the waste, and think about how policies are enforced and how to support people who take initiative. Small acts can improve the community and the environment. You don’t need a campaign, permission or a budget to make things around you look a little better, just a sense that this is my community too. Raise the standard, take initiative. It adds up.
