Broløkke Herregård

The estate is beautiful, but the service and food didn’t live up to it. We spent three hours at dinner, waiting so long that we ate a lot of bread because we were hungry. The butter came in a plastic container. For 685 DKK for a five-course menu, excluding wine, we expected a tasty, more special meal. Instead, much of it was bland, undercooked, or overcooked. The steamed white fish starter came with hot lettuce and fish eggs, and little else. The portobello was overcooked with dry cheese on top. The main course had tasty meat and gravy, but the sides were half a shallot and undercooked carrots. The small cheese portion was okay, and the dessert was nothing special. We felt overcharged. Two staff members were pleasant and appreciated our feedback, but nothing was done afterward. We’d booked a standard room in the old mansion but were put in the new building, about a five-minute walk away. It looks like a motel and, from the pictures, was still under construction even though rooms could be booked. We complained and changed rooms. The receptionist said we’d been upgraded to the main building, but the second room looked just like the one we originally booked, with the same features. Also, the Bistro was closed to guests all weekend for a wedding, and we weren’t told when booking. The quality of what was offered didn’t match the beauty of the place, which is a shame.

The estate is lovely, but make sure you have plans for the daytime since there isn’t enough to fill the whole stay. The owner is very charismatic and told us stories about buying the huge property from a local Lord while drunk. We were greeted with a drink and given the title of confranche to help spread the word about Brolokke. The food was amazing, though unusual: it’s locally grown and put together in ways that took me by surprise. It may not be for everyone, but it was a great experience.

The location and service were very nice. I’d have liked a few more activities for people who enjoy being active in their free time.
