Hotel Saxkjøbing

I had a small room in this charming old hotel, and it got pretty hot even in September. The restaurant was excellent, with ambitions of earning a star, but food and especially drinks came at Scandinavian prices. I'd like to go back to Germany :-)

On 16/4/2025, I went to the outdoor restaurant with some family. The food wasn't prepared well, and service was extremely slow even though there were few customers and "3 staff/people in the kitchen". We ordered six pieces of smørrebrød and one burger meal. Nobody asked how we wanted the burger cooked; when it finally arrived, the meat was raw in the middle, so we sent it back. We were meant to get six open sandwiches in total but only received three. We eventually left rather than wait any longer for such simple dishes. The waitresses were young and inexperienced, and mostly stayed indoors instead of looking after the outdoor tables. We got the impression that the kitchen staff weren't experienced or properly trained. My aunt had stayed at the hotel before and was just as disappointed by how long things took. She'd complained about the slow service too.

There's a nice garden at the back, and the hotel has 32 rooms, many in a building that's almost 200 years old. It also has space for big parties and small conferences. Most of the rooms are old, which is part of the experience. The food is genuine Danish cooking with a local twist, though don't expect gourmet dining. I messed up the TV system because there was no guide, so instructions for using Chromecast would have been helpful.

The breakfast was acceptable, and the juice was pretty decent. That's all I can say in its favor. The rest of the hotel was awful, like something from a horror story. My room was disgustingly dirty, with used tissues on the floor among dust, dirt, and grime. The smell was so bad I nearly threw up several times during the night. There was only one outlet that was partly usable. Everything seemed poor quality, from the blankets and towels to the trash bag and lighting. It also took hours and hours to get the door code. Staff kept saying they'd sent it, but nothing came through. The instructions for finding the room were very inadequate, to put it kindly. The room was oddly far from the actual hotel, almost like an unused shed, and both its location and view were ugly. The price was ridiculously high for what we got.
