Bov Kro

The garden and the old photos and details on the walls give Bov Kro a cozy, historic feel. It really does feel like a classic inn. We came to try it under the new owners, and the food was generous for a fair price. After dinner they brought out a very good cake in a proper large portion, and the fries and sauce kept coming. I ordered Dansk Bøf with bearnaise, fries and the usual sides. The beef was nice, though I’d have liked a touch more salt, and the bearnaise felt a little too thick and heavy for me. The fries, though, were fantastic: crisp, addictive, and unlimited. A lovely spot to sit and eat.

We had dinner at the hotel because there isn't much nearby beyond the food places in the lorry parks. The meal was good, the restaurant was busy with locals and guests, and service was excellent aside from a waiter dropping two large beers on our table. They moved us quickly and made the drinks complimentary. Prices felt a bit high, though in line with food costs in Denmark. Breakfast was good too, with a nice selection in a room at the back overlooking the garden rather than in the main restaurant. It was too cool to sit outdoors, but the view was pleasant. Padborg is a border town, with huge lorry parks on the Denmark side. The hotel is on a quiet residential street and seems to be about the only other business in town. Its history is mentioned in the information, though the rooms are in a newer extension at the back. They have a motel setup, with doors facing the free car park. The covered walkway is still open to the weather. Many rooms have parking right outside, though not all. A public footpath runs beside the car park from the road and past the hotel. Our room was large, comfortably furnished, and not especially modern, but fine. Two doors separate the bedroom from outside: the outer one opens to a small vestibule, then there's an inner door, so opening the front door doesn't expose the bedroom or let all the heat out. The bathroom is off that vestibule. The bed was clean and comfortable. Our window faced the very back of the hotel, so people on the path could look in. Mostly it was dog walkers, so it wasn't much of a problem. The bathroom was far too small. It may have been fine when the extension was built, but it doesn't work well now. It's a wet room with a shower curtain, so everything gets wet when you shower. There'd be room to improve it by taking a little space from the bedroom.

The restaurant downstairs was a lovely surprise in this cozy hotel in small Padborg city. The atmosphere was fabulous, and the elegant, nice lady serving us also spoke German. She even made spaghetti for our little son, although it wasn't on the menu. We had a large plate of salmon with vegetables, plus a bowl of potatoes that isn't shown in the picture. Delicious, and the prices were surprisingly good for a Danish à la carte restaurant. Danke, Leute!

Lovely place, and the crew were so friendly. You could tell they enjoyed their work, and their smiles rubbed off on the guests. The food tasted great and the quality matched the price, though it isn't in the cheapest price class.
