Den Gamle Købmandsgaard Bed & Breakfast

We stayed for one night in March and were the only guests in the B&B. Room 1, booked through booking.com, had a bedroom, living area, and bathroom. It was warm, clean, and had what we needed, including a nice hot shower. The place was quiet and private, and we slept well after going out to see the “black sun” starling murmurations. The town center is within walking distance, and parking is not too far away. Breakfast supplies included bread prepared in the fridge, butter and spreads, eggs, yogurt drinks, cereal, oats, and granola. There was an oven, grill toaster, egg maker, and a coffee and hot chocolate machine. If you want your bathroom inside your room, be aware that the room listed as “with a private external bathroom” is Room 2. You have to leave the room, cross the shared breakfast area, and go to the toilet on the other side. The rooms are upstairs and, as far as I could tell, only accessible by stairs, so keep that in mind if access is a concern.

The historic atmosphere paired well with modern conveniences, and the Junior Suite was more comfortable and well equipped than I expected. I had a delightful stay at Den Gamle Købmandsgaard Bed & Breakfast and would recommend it to anyone visiting Ribe, for a quick break or a longer stay. The room was difficult to get around in. Maybe it was because it was under the sloping attic roof, but the doorways were all six inches shorter than me, so I hit my head several times. The hallway sloped so steeply I couldn’t walk upright. There was no shampoo or conditioner, and parking was a bit of a hike. The house is close to the city center, which is convenient. The bed was nice, but breakfast was poor, less than you’d get at a budget hotel in the US. Guests make their own breakfast from basic things left in the fridge and on the counter.

The B&B is very cozy and well maintained, with three lovely renovated attic-style rooms. Breakfast is included, and it’s very close to the town center. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Just be aware there’s a flight of stairs to climb with your luggage, though staff try to help. Highly recommended.
