6 Person Holiday Park Home in Romo

It’s -5oC outside, and my bedroom is stuck at 10oC. The doors and windows are all shut, but wind still comes through the seal on the terrace doors, and the radiator is completely cold. What is going on? I’m paying to freeze.

We were there for a week in January, during the off-season, and sometimes seemed to be the only guests. Even so, we were welcomed warmly and had most services available. Our food allergies, including fish, were taken into account. We’re vegetarian, and every meal was thoughtfully put together and different. No simple spaghetti with sauce, even on Friday when the fish buffet was busy. The staff were always kind and helpful, and answered our questions in English or German. We especially recommend a ride with the in-house Icelandic horses. They were lovely and very calm for beginners, but still challenging enough for experienced riders. Hotel Kommandørgården on Rømø is a wonderful place. We had a great stay and would recommend going there to get hyggelig (Danish for comfortable and cosy) at Hotel Kommandørgården.

The surroundings are lovely. You can walk to the beach just outside the camp, see horses in the nearby pastures, and use the playground, which even has a bouncy castle. There’s also a small shop and bakery a short walk away. We stayed about three nights in one of the older red cabins. They’re a basic alternative to bringing your own camper, with shared showers and toilets outside. Ours was only a few metres from them. As far as I know, they were cleaned daily. The showers looked dated, but everything worked, toilet paper was always stocked, and the facilities weren’t disgusting. The cabin had the charm of an older Danish summer house. What didn’t feel charming was paying a fairly high price without bedding or towels, and finding glasses and mugs completely dusty. The whole place looked run-down. Near the end of our stay, two handymen came into the cabin saying they needed to replace the couch. The new couch was nice, but they should have told us first instead of letting strangers into our space while my partner and I were trying to nap after a hike. The place seems past its best, as if management wants easy money without putting much effort into making it pleasant. It was okay for what it was, but I don’t think I’d stay again.

The site advertises direct beach access, but that path isn’t accessible right now. Most of the staff also don’t speak Danish. We spent two nights in a tent and would avoid this campsite at any cost. The website lists two service buildings, but the larger one is permanently closed. The only shared kitchen that works is in a moldy building with water dripping from the ceiling, and the gas stoves didn’t work, so cooking was impossible. Hotel reception staff couldn’t help with it. There are showers and toilets, apparently cleaned daily, but they’re a long walk if you’re staying at the far end of the site. The place feels neglected and run-down.
