Hotel Skanderborghus

I stayed five nights for a conference, after several weeks of traveling around Scandinavia, and this was by far the noisiest hotel. Doors kept slamming and people were snoring. We were charged $10 each time we asked for fresh towels, even after explaining that the shower sprayed water all over the bathroom. Breakfast food was barely warm. That’s not what I’ve come to expect in Denmark or elsewhere in Scandinavia. For the price, it was disappointing.

The staff were the highlight, very friendly and helpful throughout. We booked two nights with breakfast and a three-course vegetarian menu each day. The room was clean and comfortable, with a great view, though nothing fancy, and the bed was comfortable enough. The first evening’s meal was a mixed bag. The soup was fantastic, but the main was an odd combination of rice and omelette with a sauce containing cow grease, which was unfortunate for a vegetarian course. The second day’s food was very good. Breakfast was okay, nothing special. I’d recommend Hotel Skanderborghus, but vegetarians should be aware of the food if they plan to eat there.

It’s a little old, but clean and nice, with friendly staff and a good breakfast buffet. Coffee is available all the time. Dinner was pretty good, though nothing exciting. Other guests made a lot of noise at night, and I wish there had been a quiet-hours rule, like asking people to keep it down after midnight. For the price, it was a good experience.

The location right by the lake is lovely, and the hotel is clean, with great service and good food. The rooms could do with a renovation.
