Best Western Vejen Kongreshotel

I’m furious about how our stay at Sportshotel Vejen went. While we were asleep, an employee tried to unlock our room. We’d put the padlock on, so he couldn’t get all the way in. We woke up, asked who was trying to enter and why, but got no answer. I quickly got dressed and looked around the corner, where I saw the employee hurrying away. The room was already unpleasant, dirty, and had many broken things. This attempt to get in was the last straw. We left right away and put the key at reception, where no one was present. Because of this, we also missed breakfast in the morning. I’d expect an apology and a refund for the stay.

We came to Vejen for the parkrun at 0900 on Saturday, but breakfast ended at 0930 and checkout was at 1000. That left no time for breakfast and barely enough time for a shower. A huge Christmas party in the room next door was intrusive, though I could have put up with it if we hadn’t already been annoyed. Our Booking.com room cost 850 krone. We brought our dog, Mutto, and the “charges may be applicable” turned out to mean another 400 krone. There was no dog bed or breakfast for Mutto, and the room charge couldn’t be refunded, so we didn’t have much choice. That should have been clearer. The bar also had no card payment option, so without cash or Danish Mobilpay you had to charge it to your room.

The rooms were decent, and breakfast was healthy. It’s a 10 minute walk into town.

Free parking was available, and the free Wi-Fi worked fine. The rooms were very clean. Ours was simple and quite cramped, because we were given a four-person room instead of the Standard Double Room we booked. It didn’t matter much since we were only there to sleep, and folding the bottom bunk against the wall gave us more room. There’s no kettle or refrigerator. We couldn’t arrive during reception hours, but the hotel offered an alternative that worked perfectly, and communication was excellent. It’s a modern, no-frills hotel with an outstanding European-style breakfast. You can book a wide range of sports activities, though they aren’t free. The lift is the strangest I’ve seen, really a moving platform in an enclosed space. It’s a great idea for older people or anyone less mobile. One thing I couldn’t understand was a Danish poster on a door saying something like “BROUGHT FOOD AND DRINKS ARE NOT ALLOWED”. It’s the strangest rule I’ve seen at any of the hundreds of hotels I’ve stayed in. Does that mean I can’t even bring mineral water? There was no sign saying the tap water was drinkable, though I assume it usually is in the EU. Am I supposed to eat my sandwich and apple in the car? I didn’t see this condition when booking, and we definitely wouldn’t have come if we’d known.
