We had a great time at Whala. We were there during the last week of the year, and the buffet on the 31th was spectacular, with very nice decoration and very good food. I believe you need to reserve for that day. The hotel has a beautiful beach, great pools, plenty of food options, and a great staff. There were a couple of downsides. The rooms need some improvement, especially the bathrooms. The bed was okay and the balcony was nice, but mornings could be noisy. Our first room was next to the street and had a lot of noise from outside. We asked to move, and the very nice girl at the front desk gave us another room. On the beach, the women offering massages were a little too aggressive, and it was sometimes hard to turn down the souvenir sellers without feeling rude. I don’t think the hotel can control that. It was our first time in Dominican Republic, and reviews had made me worried about safety. I’d also asked some Dominican friends about Boca Chica. Outside the hotel, the neighborhood doesn’t look very nice or much like a tourist destination, but everyone was friendly and we never felt in danger. Just be cautious and walk in groups to avoid problems.

The staff were friendly, helpful, and attentive throughout our stay, and we had a great experience. Special thanks to Virgilio at the reception, Juana at the buffet, and Yhon and “Chichi” at the bar closest to the buffet. They all gave us excellent service. We’d definitely stay here again on our next visit.

The beach was stunning, probably one of the top five anywhere in the world. We booked just 36 hours ahead to get away from the cold. It wasn’t our first trip that winter, so the incredibly low price was welcome and our expectations were low. The resort was modest, small, and dated, but our ocean view suite had been somewhat updated and was very clean. The staff were friendly and really tried, and there was always someone sweeping or cleaning. The food was good, 7/10. We’d read such horrible reviews that we were really surprised. The dogs on the beach were gentle and friendly. Absolutely no complaints!

We came in early April, and it’s a beautiful place for a family to relax. The garden around the hotel is very well cared for, the staff are super friendly, and the food is fantastic, with a huge variety for all tastes. The water stays calm because a natural barrier keeps waves from reaching the beautiful sandy beach, and it never storms. The upsetting part of our trip was the pack of stray dogs on the beach. I was told there are ten thousands stray animals across the island. The hotel staff can’t do anything because the beach is public. I wish the government of this beautiful country would allocate funds for animal rescue shelters, since there are none in Boca Chica.

The beach area is what I loved, so I’ll come back and try another hotel. The beachfront room was spacious and clean, the beds were okay, water pressure was adequate, and the beach was clean and safe with barely any waves. There are great restaurants next door in the beachfront area, with excellent drinks. There are lots of vendors trying to sell you something, and the food was passable. Service was okay. The drinks and alcohol were terrible, so bring your own. There’s no towel service: you have to leave a 20 dollar deposit per towel, and you need the receipt to get the money back. Ridiculous. Parking is very tight, though they have valet, and the airport is 20 to 30 min away from SDQ. There’s no elevator, but they do honor written requests in the booking comments for lower floors. I suggest the 2nd floor. If you have mobility issues, look elsewhere. The cobblestone paths need careful walking, heels are out of the question, and it’s not handicap friendly.
