The pool and restaurant sit right by the sea, with a wonderful view, and getting up early for sunrise is worth it. This old cottage-style hotel is in a really scenic part of the Dominican Republic’s southwest that hasn’t been overtaken by mass tourism. The rooms are dark and basic, fairly clean, and sometimes a little damp-smelling, though airing them out usually helps. It’s very quiet, and the food is excellent. You’ll need some Spanish or an offline dictionary. The correct name is Hotel Pontevedra. [EDIT: Google Maps has since corrected it.] The beach is rocky, but strong swimmers can swim safely.

We had a blast swimming in the ocean every day. I stayed here with a big group visiting from the US, and we all had an amazing time. The rooms were nice and had air conditioning, the staff were really friendly, and the food was delicious.

Sitting by the ocean around 7am to meditate was such a relaxing part of the stay. The place is beautiful, the staff are great, and the food was good. The rooms were plain, but that didn’t bother us. For the amount of peace you get here, the price was unbeatable. LOVE!

We asked for our money back and left. The windows don’t lock, there was no hot water, no Wi-Fi or phone service, and they served expired juices at the bar. HORRIBLE. Stay far away. We’ll never visit again.
