Hacienda Cocuyo felt like the Dominican Republic I remembered from childhood summers, raw, beautiful, and unspoiled. It was a peaceful, one-of-a-kind place after a disappointing all-inclusive stay in Puerto Plata. I can't recommend it enough. We stayed in the Valle room, which was simple, spacious, and elegant in its minimalism. There's no TV, but with those views I didn't miss one. The whole place encourages you to slow down. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuine, and the other guests were quiet, friendly, and respectful. It felt calm and special without being pretentious. My favorite time was morning, with coffee in hand amid the stillness, rain, birdsong, and distant calls of cocuyos. Every corner has a lovely view, and the miradors are pure magic. When we arrived, we parked and walked up to a cozy lobby that felt like a thoughtfully arranged living room: books on shelves, sunset light, a glassy pool, softly clinking cocktail glasses, and quiet conversation. Then the views really hit you. Breathtaking.

The nice view was the only other positive, besides Vitor, who was friendly and helpful. Overall, the sanitary conditions left us worried and the stay was far below expectations. The rooms smelled strongly of urine because of poor ventilation. Even with mosquito nets on the windows and doors, we saw cockroaches at night. After the first night we woke up covered in bites, and after the room was cleaned the next day, we found suspicious insect traces right behind our pillows. I attached a photo. The frames above the bed were badly broken, with dirty yellow marks all around them. Service was very slow: we waited about 30 minutes for a waiter at dinner. The woman at reception barely spoke English and tried to charge us for beers that weren't from our room. When we explained the mistake, she was clearly annoyed.

The location is incredible, the view spectacular, and the waiters are kind. This place could be great, but our guest experience was really bad. It's fine for Instagram pictures, and that's about it. I booked four nights and paid by bank transfer. Management emailed to confirm they had received the money and that everything was fine. When we arrived, they said the payment couldn't be found. For the next two days, most of our interactions with staff were about this. We showed them my bank statement and an email from THEM confirming receipt, but they still didn't believe us and asked us to call our bank for a receipt. I had to wake up at 6am to call the bank and get a third proof that I'd paid, because the manager said we'd have to leave our room if the issue wasn't sorted. We resolved it, even though the problem was with THEIR bank. After we showed them the receipt, there was no apology or update. That ruined the stay for us. I understand these things can happen, but asking guests for three separate proofs of payment is ridiculous. I agree with the many reviews mentioning management problems. Also, no one at reception speaks English, which made every interaction very difficult.

We spent three nights here and enjoyed every moment, from sunrise to sunset. With nature all around, birds singing, and stunning ocean views, it's hard to get enough of the peace and harmony this place offers. It's more than a hotel, it feels like a magical destination. The staff were friendly and helpful. I was grateful for the chance to explore this place, and Anna led morning yoga. She's lovely and talented.

The location and views are beautiful, but Hacienda Cocuyo felt more suited to a day pass than an overnight stay. The property has potential, yet poor management and lack of upkeep spoiled the experience. Management needs to step up before I'd recommend it. I won't be back. Our room was in terrible condition, with spider eggs and insects behind the beds, flooding in the showers, and a general feeling of neglect. The kitchen didn't look clean, and the food was overpriced for what it was. It wasn't worth the cost.
