Alatskivi Castle

The grounds and surrounding area are lovely and relaxing, and the beds are extremely comfortable. The menu was a treat too: locally sourced ingredients, creative combinations, and beautiful presentation that built up the anticipation. The sommelier had a great manner at the table and really knew both the wines and the menu. The hospitality and venue made the short trip off the beaten track well worth it. Sometimes you have to head out of the way to find a rare gem.

There are footpaths over the green hills and white bridges crossing the lakes. The former manor's many outbuildings now serve as shops, restaurants, wine shops, offices, or homes. The renovated castle is also a museum, with guest rooms and a restaurant, and there is another museum devoted to Estonian composer Eduard Tubin, who was born nearby. Alatskivi Castle was built in the same period as Balmoral Castle and looks much like it, since its owner was a fan of Scotland.

The restaurant's food pairings were a highlight. It's an amazing place, with its history, setting, and grounds.

I enjoyed the modern exhibition in the former stables, and the woman at the main building's desk was so courteous she seemed part of the old manor. Her English was great too. This is one of the manors that survived through history, and most of the building can be visited. It now serves as a hotel and restaurant. The story of the place and its Baltic German nobility is interesting, though I would have liked a little more information about both.
