The view is the only thing this place has going for it. Booking.com makes it look fancy, but the bathroom is awkward and badly designed, and the neighborhood is scandalous. This was our first stop on a tour of Egypt, and it left a deep wound in us. The accommodation is in the middle of the biggest slum. We didn't dare go to the nearby store, at night or even during the day. With the country's hygiene problems, drinking tap water isn't recommended, so we asked our host to bring bottled water to our room. He charged us ten times the price for the bottles and morning coffees. We felt vulnerable and forced to pay. Breakfast was tasteless and took hours to arrive, even though our taxi was waiting downstairs to take us to our next accommodation. The guided tour he recommended was another rip-off. They kept trying to sell us everything, and it put us in a bad mood for the tour. The host tries to draw you in with friendly words like, "don't worry about the prices, enjoy yourself, welcome to Cairo, blah blah blah," but don't believe him. He managed to rip us off. I hope other people can avoid the same thing.

The rooftop breakfast comes with a beautiful view of the Giza pyramids, and the room had that same gorgeous outlook. Waking up to it was amazing. Our room was clean and comfortable, and Mahmoud and Taghreed, the couple who own the hotel, made us feel very welcome. They’ve only recently opened, which explains the small number of reviews, but they were friendly, efficient, and always checked whether we needed anything. Both speak English. The pyramids complex is about a five-minute walk away, and the hotel also offers lots of tours. We had an awesome stay and would definitely come back.

Our belongings were stolen from luggage we left in the baggage storage. When we picked it up that evening, a Beats headphone and a USB drive from the bottom of my bag were missing. My companion’s transparent glasses and a keychain they had bought were gone too. The owner covered for the thieves, and when we raised it with the manager, he denied there was a problem and blamed us for losing the items. He gave us no evidence, such as surveillance footage, to clear our names. There were other serious problems. Our room was cleaned while we were still resting there, without our permission, which badly disrupted our rest. The booking said checkout was before 12 p.m., but staff demanded we leave by 8 a.m. and kept rushing us. It’s hard not to wonder if the early checkout makes it easier to steal from storage. The service attitude was awful, and the hotel seems very poorly managed. It’s appalling that a place I see as morally corrupt can operate in Cairo, and a disgrace to the Egyptian hotel industry.

We only stayed one night, but felt at home almost right away. The couple running the place were so kind and helpful, including with information and recommendations for the area. They’d even left drinks in the room, and breakfast was delicious. The rooms are comfortable, the roof is lovely, and the pyramids view is incredible. Amazing place and people. I’d recommend it 100%.

Our host was attentive and very accommodating. We were only at the hotel for one evening before heading to Luxor, and spent it watching the sun set gold behind the pyramids. We’d hoped to see the pyramid light show too, but it wasn’t running that night. If you want to admire the pyramids and catch a magnificent sunset behind them, this is a prime place to stay.
