Shahhat House

The house has a lovely, quiet Egyptian feel, and the roof deck looks straight out at Medinet Habu temple. Hot air balloons pass overhead each morning, which is a great sight. The owner’s family is nearby and helpful, and they arranged an airport pickup that went smoothly. They also organized a tasty breakfast on the roof for a fee, and a driver for the itinerary we chose. There’s a mini store and a few restaurants on the same street. The main thing to keep in mind is the distance from Luxor city, and taxis cost more than you might expect. Still, it’s a lovely place and good value.

The host made a late arrival easy, checking us in after we’d spent a full, busy day in Luxor. We found the house comfortable, with good beds and rooms, and the air conditioning and fans kept it cool. It’s beautifully decorated and well equipped, with everything we needed during our stay. The rooftop has fantastic views, and Medinet Habou is right next door. I’d happily recommend staying here in Luxor.

We stayed at Shahhat House for 15 nights, from 28 April to 11 May 2024. It’s a clean, spacious and comfortable house in a quiet part of the West Bank, directly across from Medinet Habu Temple. There’s plenty of room for six people, two lovely bathrooms with reliably hot water, comfortable beds, and a kitchen with more than enough equipment for cooking. The large terrace is a wonderful place to unwind at sunset. The house was quiet, and it had air conditioning and fans. With temperatures reaching 38-41°C, we only needed to run the air conditioning briefly before bed and left the fans on overnight. We used the fridge, but not the washing machine. Hamdy, the owner, communicated very well. He wasn’t in Egypt when we arrived, so his acquaintance Mahmud met us at the airport, stopped with us in the Village to get food, water and an Egyptian SIM card, and brought us the house keys. He also arranged an excellent, challenging tour to Dendera, Gebel el-Silsia and the Nile Islands in Aswan, plus other sights, all following my itineraries. There’s a pharmacy and a water shop a short distance behind the house, and two restaurants are easy to reach. We went to Model Village by tuk-tuk, 50 EGP for two, or by taxi, where you can negotiate an acceptable fare. There are bakeries and plenty of grocery stores. People were friendly and ready to help, and many sights are close by. You can take a boat to Luxor from the port below the Village. Make sure to agree on the fare first, we paid 100 EGP for two people for the return trip. By the second day we knew the area, and by the third it felt like home.
