Hotel Mesón del Gallo

Would definitely recommend it.

Breakfast had a real homey feel, like eating at your grandparents’ house. For €4 per person, you get a set menu rather than a buffet, with fruit and wood-fired bread. The space is small, so you may need to be patient while guests come and go. The owner was incredibly kind and always ready to help. Our room was spotless, and the bathroom felt luxurious, with a spectacular Scottish shower, though the shower area was a little small. It’s pet friendly, and we’ll definitely be back. We stayed two nights and the location was superb, right at the base of the city just before the tunnel. You can get around on foot from there, whether you’re climbing the steps to the cathedral or walking to the city walls. There are two huge public parking lots, one across the street and another 150 meters away, plus a stream and a children’s playground.

I haven’t visited the hotel, but I did make a reservation. Since I’d be traveling with an elderly person, I realized that climbing stairs wouldn’t be convenient. I asked whether they had ground-floor rooms or rooms with only a few stairs, and the reply was simply, “Cancel reservation.” Of course, I’m canceling, but they should say in their information that there’s no elevator and that the place isn’t suitable for people with reduced mobility. At the very least, they could have responded politely and given me the information I asked for. That was about the rudest, most discourteous answer I can imagine.

We were there on friends’ recommendation and had planned to have lunch, but changed our minds before going in. At 2:30 pm we checked whether they were still serving. They said yes, then suggested we look at the menu because perhaps the prices wouldn’t interest us. I work in the food industry and found that very unprofessional. I can understand the person may have had bad experiences, but the right thing is to welcome customers, offer the menu, and present the dishes politely so they sound appealing. It’s a shame that the inappropriate remark from the person who greeted us put us off.
