Casa Rural Urikoa

We stayed five nights and drove around a lot, visiting Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, San Sebastian, Gernika, and the coast from Mundaka to Getxo. Urikoa is handy if you’re exploring Basque Country by car, and the owners were great. They speak only Spanish, perhaps Basque too, I’m not sure, though one of them speaks French. Our ground-floor room, "Verde", was very clean and spacious, with a big bathroom and patio. The sign for "Urikoa" is hard to see even though it’s right on the street. Take care when turning right toward the house, as there’s a ditch next to the turn. The road can also be very loud at night with the window open, so earplugs might help. We tried breakfast once. The marmalade, honey, olive oil, and filter coffee were all good quality, but there’s nothing savory, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you want that in the morning.

The owners are lovely, and their tips on local activities and food were really helpful. If I’m back in this part of Spain, I’d stay here again.

Egoitz was very attentive whenever we needed anything, and the facilities had all sorts of thoughtful details. The house is in a spectacular spot in the Arratia Valley, with all the sights nearby. It’s well maintained and the area is quiet. We had a wonderful New Year’s Eve and enjoyed good company there.

We only stayed one night, but really liked it. The host gave us a warm, kind welcome and suggested several places for dinner and breakfast since we had to leave very early and couldn’t have breakfast there. Our room was roomy and cozy, and the bathroom was large and tastefully decorated. The countryside setting with mountains behind it is beautiful. We’d definitely return and stay longer.
