Hotel Las Cancelas

They know their way around gluten intolerance and can give useful advice about what on the menu is safe, and there are lots of options. The staff were well informed. It’s a really pleasant restaurant on a quiet street near the cathedral, with exceptional chuletones and delicious perdiz. Highly recommended.

My daughter and I stayed two nights, and both rooms were really nice. The staff were very friendly and gracious, and they were welcoming to travelers.

I was pleased with the red wines and my meal, mashed potatoes with pork rinds followed by a very large, moist, tasty lamb chop. Diego, our barman and waiter at las Cancelas, was outstanding and engaging. He told our group of five, including two people native to Puerto Rico, about the restaurant’s authentic cuisine. The others ordered oxtail, which was new to many of them, but they loved it. I was full, so I skipped dessert, while the rest tried lemon sorbet with champagne and raved about it. I highly recommend the restaurant at las Cancelas!

The interior terrace is beautifully decorated. We had lunch here in January in Ávila, though the roast suckling lamb was disappointing: it was too dry and seemed as if it had been cooked the day before. The beans were tasty, while the croquettes weren’t anything special. Maybe the roast is different at other times of year, when there are more tourists and the food moves faster.
