The dodgy door lock gave the stay an extra thrill, with a chair jammed under the handle and one eye open at night. The Luxmar Hotel felt like spending the night on a 1970s crime drama set. As soon as we walked in, there was a damp, musty smell, with a hint of something possibly decomposing. The room looked like a skip had supplied the decor during a power cut. Cigarette burns were scattered across the bedding like some sort of Banksy project. The grime was something you could feel, and the bed bugs seemed to treat me as an all-inclusive buffet. That musty smell hung around too. Breakfast was available, but after seeing the bedding, I thought it was safer to fast. An unforgettable experience, mostly because I’ll be talking to my therapist about it for years.

The staff were lovely, but I’d never stay here again. The rooms need a serious upgrade, and the whole place was absolutely disgusting. We went in November, there was no heating because it wasn’t working, and I froze in bed until I asked for extra blankets. The pool and sun loungers were minging. I felt like I needed fumigating after leaving.

The staff are lovely, but the place feels stuck in the 1970s, and the owner seems out of touch and unbothered by criticism. It needs change. The rooms are very dated and tired, and there’s no Wi-Fi in them. There’s no security at all, reception closes at midnight, and rowdy drunks make noise at silly o’clock. It’s basic budget accommodation, so don’t expect too much. There aren’t bed bugs, but silverfish are all over the place and it needs pest control ASAP. The cleaner doesn’t seem to know how to clean and needs to get some bleach.

You only get 60 litres of hot water before it turns cold, then it takes 60 minutes to heat back up. There’s no heating unless it drops below 10 degrees. The hob has two rings, but if you use both at once the electricity cuts out, so use them one at a time.

I booked through Booking .Com without realizing Lux Mar had two parts, and my stay was in the privately owned section. The apartment had a large kitchen full of appliances, though it was short on plates. The shower was slippery and very dangerous. The area is good.
