The mirror in my bathroom came crashing down around 3AM and woke me up. It broke some of my things, and I wasn’t compensated. I’m glad I wasn’t in the bathroom at the time, because that could have been dangerous. For a small, inexpensive roadside hostel, I still expected the room to be furnished safely. I told the staff about it in the morning, showed them the photos I’d taken overnight, and checked out. When I followed up in chat, they blamed me for everything. The owner was rude, and the way they handled it was completely unacceptable. The Wi-Fi barely worked in the restaurant and wasn’t available in the rooms. Terrible.

The local evening crowd makes Hostal Betelu a nice place to get a feel for the Basque area. The hospitality was the best part, and the restaurant has a good range of meals. The rooms were cozy and clean, which is what you hope for when staying in the countryside, though it isn’t always a given. If you don’t speak Spanish, you may be able to get by in English or French, depending on who’s serving. Breakfast starts at 9, and the kitchen opens at 8:30 pm. I skipped lunch, so I can’t say anything about that.

The village has lovely views and is beautiful. We really enjoyed the place: the room was nice and very clean, the bar felt friendly, and the service was excellent.
