Barceló Bilbao Nervión

I never actually stayed at this hotel. Months before check-in, an unexpected emergency meant I tried to cancel, but they refused to refund me despite the advance notice and circumstances I explained. There was no flexibility or empathy, and they made no effort to work with me, even though they had plenty of time to rebook the room. The management team was impossible to reach, and the supervisor was never available despite my repeated calls and emails. I couldn’t get hold of anyone with the authority to resolve the issue. The whole experience was frustrating and unprofessional, and the hotel’s communication and customer service were unacceptable for any hotel, let alone one marketed as 4-star. A 4-star property should communicate clearly and handle problems professionally, and this one did neither. If you’re considering booking, I’d look elsewhere. Guests don’t seem to be a priority here, and the lack of communication and refusal to resolve a basic issue made this a stressful experience.

It felt like a modern hotel, and the service was excellent. Everything was walkable, including the train to the mountaintop, the Guggenheim, and both the old and new town. The beds wobbled a little because they were on wheels. The shower had poor circulation, with some spots that were clearly harder to clean. Even so, we had a very good stay.

Breakfast was a highlight, with excellent variety and quality, though the coffee could be better. I’d give it 9/10. The bar was open, but after 9:30pm they said they couldn’t serve most food items, which was disappointing for a hotel of this level. The hotel is nicely placed for the main sights, and the rooms are decorated well and a decent size. Our small window let in little natural light. Parking was convenient but tight, so maneuvering a car takes care. The shower temperature kept changing, and although we reported it to reception, nothing was done during our stay. Housekeeping also left our tea cups unwashed and didn’t replace the bottled water. It’s a nice hotel with plenty of potential, but service and maintenance need work.

The staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay, and breakfast offered a good selection. The modern room was clean and comfortable. Barceló Bilbao Nervión is very well located, just a short walk from the Guggenheim Museum and the old town. I had a very good experience and would definitely recommend it for comfort and location.
