The hotel is well placed for walking along the estuary to the Guggenheim and old town. Breakfast was quite good, the bed very comfortable, and the car park felt safe, though it was very tight and awkward. The room wasn’t very dog friendly: it reeked of chemical floor cleaner and needed the window open for hours. Doors, safe fascia, and other fixtures were worn and outdated, and need proper repairs. Mercedes and her younger female colleague were attentive and welcoming. Their older male colleague was rude and abrupt, with poor customer service. At checkout he didn’t even look up when I asked for his attention, just told me, “wait a minute!”

For two nights with breakfast and motorcycle parking, I paid 364euros. Compared with other hotels, that felt expensive for what was offered. I’ve stayed in many places as a seasoned traveller, and this felt like a budget hotel charging a 4 star price. NH Bilbao Deusto is fairly close to the port of Bilbao, 21km away, and I stayed there in early August 25. It’s very basic, with a small breakfast dining area and no social space except a little seating area by reception. The rooms and beds are comfortable, with a fridge, safe, and a TV that gets one English channel, 'BBC news'. The bathroom had the usual facilities and a shower over the bath. There’s a good basement car park served by a lift.

The room I got was about the size of a sofa, and there wasn’t even a blanket on the bed. They told me to turn up the heat because they don’t have blankets. Go figure. Being close to the Guggenhiem is about the only thing this place has going for it.

The staff were a delight, especially the receptionist who took our Spurs banter in stride and joined in. He was great. The hotel is an easy walk from the city, and when we asked to switch to twin beds on our second night, they made it happen without any fuss.
