Hacienda San Jorge

The garden is absolutely superb, and the pool is a dream. The gym is quite old, though, and the Wi-Fi is horrendous; my laptop wouldn’t connect, so something simpler would be better. Before arrival, the service was very poor. When I wanted to book, the staff were impolite and said I couldn’t add two separate nights to an existing booking.

The cove just beyond the back exit was a highlight: our kids could play there safely, and it seemed popular with locals too. We also spent time at the beach bar, where the calamari was incredibly fresh and some of the best I’ve had. There are a few restaurants and supermarkets within walking distance, enough for us to find somewhere to eat each evening, and a bus stop right outside goes to the capital in about 10 minutes. We came for a week with our 9-, 8- and 1-year-old. I’d been a little unsure because there weren’t many reviews from families, but it all worked out brilliantly. The basic rooms were clean and modern, and had what we needed, plus a large pool-facing balcony. The gardens were lovely and well kept, and the saltwater pool was a comfortable temperature for the kids to spend hours in. We were self-catering so we could explore. A really relaxing break, and I’d recommend it for all ages.

The staff are lovely. It’s chilly for us, and there’s no heating in the rooms, but they brought us blankets and we stayed warm. The water view is great.

Having a baby with us was easy thanks to how warm and helpful the staff were. I also have a severe food allergy, and I’ve never felt so well looked after; I felt safe and enjoyed the food choices every day. The place itself is beautiful, set among botanical gardens. We had an amazing first holiday with our baby. Highly recommend!
