Hostal Vehí

The welcome was really warm, and the service was great. Our room was clean and comfortable, with a decent shower, and the location was spot on. Highly recommend it.

I left before spending even one night, though I still paid the fee. The experience was bad enough that I signed up to Google just to warn people. At first, booking by phone was easy: the staff were friendly and accommodating, the location was great, and the room was roomy enough. Then everything went downhill after check-in. I was planning a longer stay, and since Cadaques has no laundries, I asked how I could wash my clothes. I got shrugs. Asked how other guests managed, and got more shrugs. The receptionist, who had been speaking perfect English, turned surly and suddenly spoke only Catalan, saying “ho sento, ho sento,” and no English or Spanish. I found the excellent Hostal Cristina down the road, where the service and facilities were better and they were happy to do laundry. When I left Vehí, the receptionist suddenly had perfect English again and was eager to offer their own laundry service. It really shouldn't be so difficult. Cristina also had free internet, a location just as good, and a much warmer feel.

From my bed, I could hear a guitar player, and the music seemed to lift my restless curiosity. I kept poking my head out the window and playing music for the cats, who are too old to stand for even a minute. Around the place, little passageways and alleys ran through the walls, so quaint and picturesque that I wished my own hometown had been preserved that way. The highway makes this town just inaccessible enough to keep it true for another moment or two. Being here made me feel like some Catalan version of Zorba the Greek had taken over, shutting out my usual way of thinking for a while. From the entrance, every detail seemed to glisten through a fractured depth of field.

We booked as we were walking around Cadaqués that day. The receptionist was very friendly. Our double room had a balcony and felt spacious and bright, with a lovely outdoor spot and a really comfy bed.
