TAIGA Lake Caspe

The setting is beautiful. We arrived on a Sunday evening in June, after what looked like a packed weekend, and by Monday the place was empty. I'm not sure the 4 /5 showers could handle a really busy campsite. They looked a bit tired, and the water was lukewarm or cold. The pitches were untidy, so a ground sheet would be a good idea.

The pool is large, but getting up to it means climbing decking steps, so disabled access isn't possible. The fake grass around it gets dangerously hot underfoot. The gravel slope and route to the toilet block would also be very difficult for disabled visitors. Ivy has grown into the shower block and needs removing, and the shower and washing-up water was cool. There's a washing machine but no dryer. The site is out of the way and the plots are small. The restaurant was closed during our stay, and the food truck wasn't an adequate replacement. Food and drink hygiene were poor: a recyclable wine cup smelled of coffee and didn't seem properly washed, and the replacement smelled the same. Cups and soda bottles were left around the lakeside, which wasn't well presented. Staff seemed unhappy with the new management style.

The place has a lovely atmosphere, and the natural surroundings made our stay really nice. The Wi-Fi, though, was very poor.

We stayed at a camper pitch. The location is ideal, with nature all around and plenty to do, like cycling and swimming. Standard services are easy to reach and work fine, though their quality is average. The restaurant was the main problem. The menu was very limited, which we could have lived with, but the service was outright rude. The restaurant was half empty, so it didn't seem to be caused by high stress or the high season. It came across as a careless attitude to guests' needs. It's a great spot, but the staff selection needs work to make it perfect.
