We found parking just outside the castle easily in February. In summer, I think it’d be better to leave the car in the parking area before the village, Aparcamiento castillo de Castellar, and walk in. Another possibility is to park near Restaurante La Jarandilla and follow the old Roman road, Calzada Dehesa Boyal. That route needs proper shoes and good fitness, though, as the stones are very worn and slippery when wet. The old castle and the little village inside its walls are wonderful.

Well worth visiting, this beautiful castle has a village inside its walls, with fabulous views, good food, and great bars. Castellar de la frontera is an amazing place!

The views from the castle are gorgeous, and we had a lovely time wandering through the romantic little streets. We visited at the start of January, so it was quiet, but sadly all the cute shops nearby were closed. The castle itself is beautiful.

The flower filled alleys and far reaching views from the top make this an interesting place to explore. The roads getting there may put some people off, but we thought the trip was still worthwhile even though the restaurant was closed when we arrived. Don’t confuse it with the town of the same name, though you should visit that too since it’s nearby.

In the morning, the castle’s old town feels small, cozy, and wonderfully atmospheric. You can stroll around on your own.
