Las Gaviotas is one of our favourite places in La Duquesa, the kind of beach chiringuito that feels like home. It keeps the old Costa del Sol spirit while being a little modernised, and still has its charm. The food is simple, tasty, and cooked with care, with that homemade flavour that's getting hard to find. In summer, the place has its own soundtrack: cutlery clinking, the sea breeze, and Spanish conversation all around. We miss that buzz the rest of the year. It's often chaotic, with kids running around and waiters weaving between crowded tables, but there's a lovely sense of organised disorder and somehow it all works. Service can be slow, though the staff are friendly and usually smiling. Every so often there's a bit of Costa del Sol ego too, which somehow adds to the authenticity. And Pepi really runs the show. She's warm, quick-thinking and unflappable, answering seven people at once while remembering your order, making you laugh, and serving boquerones that taste like summer. The food, noise and bustle give you a real feel for beach life, past and present.

We stay in Nueva Andalucia and like heading out along the CDS. After seeing La Duquesa on TV and hearing about it from friends who'd visited, we decided to pop over. The marina itself didn't impress me much. With Mexican, Indian, Chinese and all-day English food, it felt like you might as well have stayed in blighty. Luckily, the woman at the mini market and souvenir shop told me where to find Chiringuito Las Gaviotas. It's a genuinely authentic Spanish beach bar, with the lovely food you hope to find in Spain. We went twice and had food from the boat BBQ both times. I especially liked the Espetos de Malaga, google it if you don't know them. The staff were really friendly and efficient without hovering. On both visits, a violin busker played for 10 or 15 minutes under a palm tree, so it wasn't too loud or in your face. We'll be back next year. It's worth the drive, and better and cheaper than the Chiringuito's closer to Marbellla.

We found this little hidden place and were glad we gave it a try. The food was amazing, with local dishes made from fresh ingredients, and the location is fantastic. An absolute must if you're visiting the area.

At first I wasn't sure, as it looked quite touristy when we arrived. They brought menus over and served water. But the sardines, calamari and squid were excellent, and the wine choice was spot on. For eight of us, the bill came to €350. Great value!

We tried it several times last summer and enjoyed every visit. Glad to find it's just as good this year. We've been for lunch and dinner a few times over the past two weeks, and each time the food was tasty, the service friendly, and the location lovely.
