We left the next morning after finding bugs and worms throughout the house. My daughter was playing on the floor when a spider suddenly got into her mouth. The night before, we’d arrived with our children to find the owners away and the key left in the lock. Outside were five dogs, including two huge mastiffs. They kept jumping on us and hurting us, and it didn’t feel safe for the kids to walk around or play outside with unfamiliar dogs running loose. When we called to ask if the dogs could be moved the next day, we were told nobody had ever had trouble with them and nothing could be done, though they were described as very well-behaved. We have a dog ourselves, but that didn’t make this feel reasonable. We’d booked the palloza, a traditional thatched house, for the weekend. The owner charged us for the first night, not the second, but we were also charged €20 in Booking.com fees.

The family made us feel so welcome, and it was a perfect spot to switch off. We spent three days there and loved it. We’ll definitely return.

The underfloor heating was a must, since cold air came in from above. We could’ve used a sofa, cushions, or poufs to make things more comfortable, and the kitchen felt a little dated. Still, the children loved the unusual stay and the village mastiffs, and the palloza has a wonderfully timeless feel inside. The landscape around it is incredible, and for us the distinctive experience made up for the missing comforts.
