Rivendell Eco lodge

We had a lovely stay at rivendell. The setting is beautiful, the host is charming, and the atmosphere is welcoming. We couldn't do the hike we'd planned because of park restrictions, but it was still an adventure. There are quite a few animals, about 14 cats and 5 dogs. I love animals, though that felt like a lot, especially with dogs in the kitchen area where you'd want good hygiene. They can bark sometimes. If animals don't bother you, I'd definitely recommend going.

Rivendell is a warm, colorful, creative community that supports rescued animals and people, and Alison leads it with a lot of heart and respect for the valley and nature. I loved the adventurous, communal feel, and this is the kind of tourism I want to see more of. Getting there involves a walk, but the view is breathtaking, and the listing and WhatsApp message explain that it's a mountain off-road retreat. If you prefer convenience, don't enjoy hiking, animals, nature, or a challenge, a regular hotel may suit you better. I liked it enough to extend my stay, and it seemed I wasn't the only guest doing that. The hosts and other guests were friendly and welcoming, and there was plenty of room to relax alone or spend time together. Despite the remote setting, the bathrooms, wifi, and kitchens are cosy and well equipped, and it has the comfort of a good hostel. The place is surrounded by animals and pets, and there are house rules, including no alcohol or substance use, for reasons I understood once I arrived. Check the booking page and map first: it's remote, with hills and walking, not a central, sterile hotel. I'll definitely come back for a few days when I'm back on La Palma.

I showed up late at night in the dark and asked if I could pitch a tent or even sleep on the stone floor. I was willing to pay, but they wouldn't let me stay. They told me to look for somewhere near the barranco, where the rocky ground was dangerous and I nearly broke my legs. They seemed open-minded and hippie-like, but when I was in a difficult situation, they left me to fend for myself.
