Camping Berceo

The pitches are spacious, the facilities clean if not especially modern, and the bar/cafe is friendly, cheap and tasty. The monasteries are an easy cycle away, and Rioja country is an easy drive. Heading south, there’s a fantastic gorge road to Neila and its glacial lagoons. It takes about two hours over some challenging roads, but it’s well worth it and makes a nice change from looking at wineries. We had a fantastic time and I’d happily come back, even though it costs a little more than some sites and there’s no ACSI discount. I’d just hope for quieter neighbours next time. We landed here on a weekend in early June after two campsites farther north in Rioja were full, so we were stressed and relieved to have a spot for Friday night. There’s plenty to like, though some parts may not suit everyone. The lovely-looking pool still wasn’t being filled by 09/06. There are lots of long-stay and residential pitches, which I think bring community and atmosphere, although clearly not everyone agrees. Finding bread before 10:00 can be a struggle, even if you cycle around the nearby towns. And avoid pitching near the raised tent camping area unless you’re happy to have a fairly big family party entertaining you until 02:00.

The restaurant serves home-cooked food, with a varied menu at very reasonable prices. I’d highly recommend eating there. It’s a first-class campsite, with large, private pitches and a really big pool. The manager was very helpful and let us choose our own pitch.

I’ve stayed here three times, usually on the way to or from southern Spain. The access road is longer than you might expect with a caravan, but once you know where you’re going, it’s fine. The grassy pitches are large and have electricity, though no water. The shower and toilet block is clean and was built fairly recently. There’s a bar for drinks and food, and the swimming pool is a nice addition. A good site in a beautiful part of Spain. I’ll be back.

For the price, it’s pretty good, especially with the nice municipal pool included. It’s one of the few campsites where the owners actually water the grass on every pitch. The restaurant was okay.
